Operation Christmas Child – the Shoebox appeal 2013
Samaritan’s purse – a Christian charity, runs this appeal every Christmas and last year the Sheffield centre sent 25,000 shoeboxes filled with presents to deprived children in eastern Europe and beyond. Lots of churches, as well as schools and youth organizations, fill shoeboxes. Peter Chatterton and John Green, work on the Rotary Club transport for this project and have offered to collect shoeboxes from St. John’s. If you or your family would like to take part this year all the guidance on content is on their website at – http://www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk/what-to-pack. We need to have boxes back to church on or before 8 December.
The word posada means ‘inn’ or ‘shelter’ in Spanish, and the tradition recreates Mary and Joseph’s search for a place to stay in Bethlehem. Small dolls representing Mary and Joseph are passed around houses during Advent as people ‘make room’ for them in their preparations for Christmas. There is also a small diary which comes with them and which we invite you to write a few lines in, saying a word or two about what has happened in your home while Mary and Joseph have been with you or something about your preparation for Christmas. You phone the person next on the list and arrange to meet them to hand over Mary and Joseph who then continue their journey. Mary and Joseph will travel in homes throughout the parish and will finally be brought to Church on Christmas Eve.
Christmas Card Board
This year we are asking, instead of sending individual cards, if St John’s Parishioners could put a Christmas card on the notice board at the back of church to the whole church family. All donations in lieu of individual cards will go to Phoenix House.
