A warm and festive welcome to our website. Advent and Christmas is a very special time in the life of the Church here in Ranmoor. A time to prepare ourselves to celebrate the birth of Jesus. There are many things happening at St John’s during this wonderful season, continuing with our traditional Nine Lessons and Carols service on the 21st at 6.30pm. Our range of services and events mean that all are welcomed unconditionally and will find a home to be together as one Church family. You are invited to join in the fun and festivities.
For information about all our Services during Advent, over the Christmas period and into 2015, please see Our Services.
La Nativité du Seigneur – Monday 22nd December at 8.00pm
Our Assistant Director of Music, Derek Grover plays Olivier Messiaen’s masterpiece on the Organ of St John’s. The nine organ meditations on Christ’s nativity will be interspersed with Christmas readings. These will be chosen and read by our own literature scholar and published poet, Eleanor Lloyd. This will be an opportunity for stillness and reflection amongst the bustle of the days leading up to Christmas, as Derek and Eleanor present aspects of the Christmas story in beautiful and unusual music and verse.
‘A Ranmoor Christmas’ – our CD
The highly acclaimed Christmas CD of our choirs is available for purchase – a perfect Christmas present! Speak to Tom Dakin or one of our musicians. £10 for 1 CD, or £20 for 3 CDs.
Operation Christmas Child– Samaritan’s Purse
Many thanks to everyone who has donated a shoebox. We as a church family collected in excess of 100 shoe boxes which was an incredible donation.
The word posada means ‘inn’ or ‘shelter’ in Spanish, and the tradition recreates Mary and Joseph’s search for a place to stay in Bethlehem. Small dolls representing Mary and Joseph are passed around houses during Advent as people ‘make room’ for them in their preparations for Christmas. There is also a small diary which comes with them and which we invite you to write a few lines in, saying a word or two about what has happened in your home while Mary and Joseph have been with you or something about your preparation for Christmas. You phone the person next on the list and arrange to meet them to hand over Mary and Joseph who then continue their journey. Mary and Joseph will travel in homes throughout the parish and will finally be brought to Church on Christmas Eve. If you would like to be involved please sign the sheet at the back of church.
Floral Decorations in Church for Christmas
We will be decorating the church window sills on Saturday 20st December at 9.30am and the rest of the church on Monday 22nd December at 9.30am and need lots of helpers please! Please could you ring Jackie Lowe 0114 230 3999 or Sandra Green 0114 230 9180 if you are able to help. Thank you. We will also be needing variegated holly and tree ivy with fruits; if anyone has any that we may cut to use in the decorations could you please let us know. Jackie and Sandra will fetch all the flowers needed from the wholesale market beforehand and as previously the church would welcome any donation to pay for these.
Christmas Card Board
This year we are asking, instead of sending individual cards, if St John’s parishioners would like to put a Christmas card on the notice board at the back of church to the whole church family. All donations in lieu of individual cards will go to Phoenix House & the work of the children’s society.
Between 7 November and 6 February the UK Government will double every donation to the Christian Aid Christmas Appeal. The money will go to maternal and child health care projects in Kenya and Malawi. Go to christianaid.org.uk/deliverhope to donate
