Derek  Derek Grover - Assistant Director of Music (Acting Director of Music)

Derek has been assistant organist at St John’s Ranmoor, Sheffield since 1988. He has been actively engaged in music since becoming a choirboy at the age of 7, singing, playing piano, organ and harpsichord and conducting.

 Catherine Chapman Acting Choral Director

Cathy Chapman

Catherine Chapman was a chorister in her parish church near Bath from the age of six.  As a teenager she was awarded as place as Junior Exhibitioner in the Royal College of Music Junior Department, studying violin with Barbara Lyle and Piano with Isabella Yu.  She read Music at Cambridge University, where she continued studying violin with Howard Davies and Detlev Hahn at the Royal Academy of Music.  At Cambridge University she directed numerous choirs, orchestras and ensembles, sang with Cambridge University Musical Society Chorus under Stephen Cleobury, and with Selwyn College Chapel Choir, and played violin in the Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra.  Catherine went on to join the Bach Choir and Semi-Chorus under the baton of Sir David Willcocks, and following a PGCE year, taught music at Woldingham School in Surrey where she also started an orchestra and a highly successful choir, which she took on a tour of Germany in its third year.

Following several years overseas, working as a teacher and in International Development, during which she acquired a Masters Degree in Education from Bristol University as well as a husband and three children, Catherine returned to teaching, most recently as Director of Music at St Peter and Paul Preparatory School in Chesterfield. Here she expanded the Music Department from one choir to four, one of which went on to reach the finals of the both the National Choral Competition and the Llangollen International Eisteddfod.  She also conducted recorder groups, an orchestra and directed a wide variety of highly acclaimed musical productions for ages 5 to 11, including HMS Pinafore, Oliver, Sleeping Beauty and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.

Catherine has been singing with St John’s Choir since 2009.  In addition to her choral singing she has undertaken solo work in oratorios both in the UK and abroad.

Alongside her current work with the choirs of St John’s Church, Catherine continues to teach violin, piano and singing to pupils in Sheffield and Chesterfield.

Joseph Hutchinson – Organ Scholar

JOSEPH HUTCHINSON was born in Chesterfield, and later became a chorister at the Parish Church. Through the choir, Joseph started learning the piano under Michael Baker, and the organ with Ian Brackenbury. Joseph then went to the University of Bristol reading music, studying organ with David Ponsford, and piano with Raymond Clarke. Whilst there, he was also the University Organ Scholar, and conducted the University of Bristol Church Choir. After graduating, Joseph became Organ Scholar at St John’s Church, Ranmoor, and is now Assistant Director of Music at Chesterfield Parish Church, alongside his scholarship. With this responsibility, Joseph is the Accompanist to the Boys’ Choir, and directs the newly set up Girls’ Choir. Alongside these posts, Joseph also teaches piano peripatetically at St Peter & St Paul Independent School in Chesterfield, locally performs recitals, and is regularly sought to accompany local choirs for services, weddings, and school events.
