Music at St John's: Introduction
Music has always played an important role in the life of St John’s Church, Ranmoor, Sheffield. We continue to have a thriving programme of choral services and events which is renowned throughout the North of England and further afield. This is led by our professional Organist and Director of Music, assisted by the Assistant Director of Music, our annually appointed Organ Scholar and a range of other staff and volunteers.
Central to music at St John’s is our separate choirs of boy and girl choristers, freely offering children and young people from across the city and surrounding areas the highest standards of musical education. The Director of Music is pleased to hear from the parents of prospective boy or girl choristers at any time of the year. The alto, tenor and bass parts are provided by volunteer Songmen and Choral Scholars who are given a bursary.
Additionally, there is a group for adult sopranos called St John’s Consort. Particularly popular with university students, this group joins the Songmen and Choral Scholars to sing for monthly services.
The Occasional Singers and Quavers for babies, toddlers and parents completes the range of regular singing opportunities available to all age groups.
