St John’s Consort is an exciting new group for sopranos and altos of 18 years and over. The choir is perfect for female students at the University of Sheffield or Sheffield Hallam University that wish to sing an exciting range of liturgical music to a high standard in a friendly atmosphere. The choir is equally suitable for singers from the local community or further afield with appropriate skill and experience.

Rehearsals are early on a Monday evening (6.15 to 7.30pm), and the choir sings with the Songmen and Choral Scholars once a month at two Sunday services. There is also the opportunity to take part in special services, concerts, commercial recordings and international tours. The church also holds many weddings. For these, choir members earn a fee, and singers from Consort are given first refusal. Because the regular commitment is small, it is possible for singers to combine membership of St John’s Consort with other liturgical or concert choirs in Sheffield.

The choir sings a range of beautiful and exciting choral works from the church music repertoire, ranging from plainsong and early renaissance polyphony to 21st Century music and specially commissioned compositions. Because of the quality and quantity of repertoire, previous musical experience and basic music reading skills are essential.
